All jokes aside, from the very first day we met at work I sensed the force to be strong with this one. I discovered early on that Geoff appreciates sick bars, as in seriously good lyrics. So I just had to bombard him with more rhymes every time I saw him in the stockroom. I knew then that one day, when the time was right, we would get it cracking in the studio.
So first things first, how on Earth did you get your name G3P0? “Well, it all started many moons ago when I was just a young producer in training, back in the dojo in a galaxy, far far away...”
“Ah, it’s just a bit of fun really, I originally released music under the name G3, the P0 was added by everyone else. Although now, most people just call me G for short. The Star Wars connection is cool too so I’m happy to keep it going...”
And so he should be. Geoff has managed to put out a bunch of singles through his own label, Little Corner. Assisted along the way with regular airtime on East London’s Radar Radio. These appearances were soon followed by the LP ‘Garden Reach’, released through Rudimentary Records. Incidentally, the very personal title was taken from the house he grew up in.
Geoff also appeared at the Glade Festival in Norfolk back in 2014, “I was going to be releasing an EP through a friend’s label called Sonic Router at the time and was asked to come and promote it on stage. The EP actually got shelved and I ended up putting it out myself on Littler Corner a year later...”
I can sense G3P0 is determined to get ahead but not at all costs. For this reason he isn’t too keen on hammering all the social media buttons until the cows come home. Instead of messing about with all that jazz, he would rather let his music do the talking for him.
I understand you’re inspired by the sounds of Dj Rashad, Flying Lotus and Wiley. How would you say these influence and others have shaped the artist you are today? “I would say all those individuals are pretty different from each other sonically, but certainly elements of each of their sound can be heard in my music. It’s more their uniqueness that influences me. It’s not always the case, but originality is one of the most important things to me when writing...”
“In terms of my production style, I just do my thing and see where it takes me. I tend to work as and when I can, pretty much whenever I feel like it really. Often many hours can pass by with me glued to my computer...”
Personally I find any and all input is welcome at this point as I continue to learn at every turn. At this particular moment in time I am incredibly keen to collaborate with anyone that has production skills. Mainly in the hope that I will eventually learn what it takes to make my own rhythms and beats as this will open up a whole world of possibilities for me.
For G3P0 the future is clear; “I just want to make the best music I can and release as much of it as possible before I check out of this rock...” With a couple of projects on the horizon, the prospect of combining our musical might is tantalising. If the vibe we have when we’re just hanging out is anything to go by then the studio is most definitely going to get annihilated.
“His home is the dojo,
But, you know what,
G3P0 is No robot,
His soul force is so up,
He’s often laughing and grinning,
As a minimum,
Always giving his maximum,
When crafting a rhythm,
He hardly ever gives in,
Until the sick rift,
Makes a lasting imprint,
Whatever the path we’re given,
Here’s the sweet part,
There’s no need to be hard,
For we are,
A couple of Free Stars,
Chasing the stage with tequila,
Can’t wait to be REAL Ma,
And forget the great deals we’ll pass,
For its the beats we make,
That thrills the streets we wake,
All it takes is skill and heart,
Plus the vibe to fly to Mars,
This whole art is the type of craft,
That guide us to blow like a blast,
Just watch as we grow and advance,
Knowing the soul is the spark we needed,
To row hard and past the defeated,
Bee stings to all the heartless heathens,
That can’t believe it,
This is just the start,
So start believing...”
